The right wing of the European Parliament once again promotes a debate on “the situation in Cuba”, scheduled for next Thursday, December 16th, in the framework of December’s Plenary Session.
The organizers pretext is the alleged situation of a group of citizens who are not human rights defenders in Cuba and do not represent the majority of the Cuban population. On the contrary, these citizens respond to the explicit interests stated by the United States government and their actions aim mainly to achieve a “change of regime” in Cuba, to subvert the internal order and destabilize the country at any cost.
Debates on Cuba have been present in three of the last six plenary sessions of the EP. No other country in Latin America and the Caribbean has been so discussed in this period of time. This fact shows how singularized and manipulated the HR subject can be, and the double standards of those who use it in a markedly political background. Such attitude further discredits the image of the so-called home of European democracy.
None of the latest resolutions approved on Cuba have the minimum decency to mention the impact of the criminal economic, commercial and financial blockade, imposed by the US government for more than six decades and which has been intensified in a genocidal and premeditated manner in the midst of this pandemic.
If the MEPs who have promoted this new anti-Cuban manoeuvre were really interested in the human rights of the Cuban people, they would first denounce the flagrant and systematic violation represented by the implementation of the blockade. Even more since they know how this extraterritorial policy affects the interests of the european companies and citizens MEPs are supposed to represent.
Despite the impact of this hostile policy that suffocates and kills, and the scarce resources available to the country, Cuba has successfully managed to control the pandemic and has been able to produce its own vaccines, thanks to which more than 90% of our population has already been immunised. The country has become the first in the world to vaccinate infants over the age of two. This and many other realities will once again be omitted by the right wing of the EP in the debate on Cuba.
Clearly, this anti-Cuban manoeuvre is once again intended to hinder bilateral relations between Cuba and the European Union, thus undermining the implementation of the Political Dialogue and Cooperation Agreement between Cuba, the European Union and its member states. Dialogue on equal terms, under the principle of mutual respect, non-interference, and cooperation constitute the appropriate basis for fostering ties between both parties.
As our Foreign Minister has declared: «Neither threats nor blackmail will wring the slightest political concession from us». Only the Cuban people can decide on his destiny.
